4 Tips on Repairing Wooden Fences for Homeowners

Monday, December 28, 2020

Did you know that wooden fences are more than an aesthetic design choice? They also add a layer of privacy and even bring up the overall value of your home.

That's why it's important to keep your fences in tip-top shape. If you're struggling with trying to repair your wooden fence, keep reading.

Listed down below are some of the best tips to get you started on the right foot!

1. Stop the Spread of Rot

One of the biggest signs of damage is when the wood material starts to rot and crumble away. You'll end up needing to repair the fence again in a few weeks if you don't stop the rot from spreading before you begin.

The best way to do this is to apply liberal amounts of wood preservative over the entire infected area.

This chemical soaks into the wood and protects it from infestations and water damage. It gives the wooden fence far more longevity than if you were to leave it bare. Always be sure to include a high-quality preservative into your fence repair tools!

2. Use Sandpaper and Wood Putty

For minor cracks and holes in the wood, it's often enough to use a coarse sandpaper and wood putty to fix the damage.

The sandpaper creates a rough texture that allows the putty to stick and stay in place. The putty acts as a bandage, filling in the gaps to create a seamless surface.

Once the putty dries, sand it down to smooth out any uneven edges. To make the fix blend in with the rest of the wood, apply a new coat of staining to the entire fence.

3. Support a Sagging Fence

If you notice a dip in the rails and boards of your wooden fence, the posts may be starting to sink into the ground. Posts often begin to sink under the weight of the fence as weathering causes the ground around the post to become unstable.

To fix this, you'll need to dig up the dirt around the base of the post. Break the post as close to the base as possible, and then lift it back up to its proper position.

Adding new concrete to the base is the best solution to keep it in place, although sometimes placing a block of wood underneath the post works as well.

4. Call a Professional

Sometimes a fix is too big for a DIY project. If the entire structure of your fence is unstable and collapsing, this means it's a safety hazard and requires professional help.

Call a professional repair company to help get your fence looking as good as new. They have all the right tools and expertise to tackle the project without the risk of causing more damage to your home.
